The Checkered Past of Coffee
By Tod Demuth
Can you imagine what society would be like today without coffee? No espresso, no cappuccino--no cup a joe to get the morning started? That just about was the case, if the Pope hadn't stepped in. Coffee originally came out of Ethiopia and found its way to what is now Turkey. It was almost banned by there due to its stimulating effect on people, but they gave in and the first coffee house opened there in around 1511. Traders starting selling coffee in Italy, in Venice where the wealthy lived. They charged high prices for it and started to make a good business of it. The popularity of coffee grew and it eventually reached Rome, where it hit a little bump in the road; namely, some of the priests. These priests condemned the consumption of coffee. They argued that it was a beverage created by Satan for the Muslim infidels as a substitute for wine. (Wine was okay because Christ sanctified it, the church sanctified it and wine was used in Holy Communion.) Well, this wasn't a popular edict. Pleas to ban coffee in the Holy Roman Empire were coming in and I imagine the Merchants of Venice were lobbying the other way. Pope Clement VIII came to power in 1952 and finally in 1600 put the issue of the devil's brew to rest. He must of liked coffee as he blessed it and baptized it! Being the statesman he was, he reasoned that banishing coffee would be a larger sin than drinking it. It didn't take long for coffee to find its way to Italy and the rest of Europe, but the first coffee house didn't open until 1645. Thank the Pope for that! |
